Myths, Magic & Mystery – Halloween at Treacys

Halloween originated over 2,000 years ago in Ireland and since then we have celebrated, scared and trick or treated. Few people know it was our ancient ancestors the Celts who started it all off. Halloween was once known for being the time the walls between our world and the next were at their weakest.  In order to make sure no evil spirits came around them, Celts would disguise themselves in different costumes that would scare evil away. This is why we dress in costumes to this day!

Games are an essential part of the Halloween tradition. Did you know that all the games we enjoy today had a very different meaning when Halloween first started? A favourite, bobbing for apples, was a way for young girls to discover their future and when they would marry. Everyone’s favourite, barmbrack, was very important during Samhain. A gold ring, hidden in the cake, would determine the next maiden down the aisle.

Scary costumes, collecting sweets and watching Hocus Pocus are childhood memories we all recall fondly and pass down through generations.

Get a little spookier this Halloween and come to Treacys West County which is the perfect venue to bring all the family for a few activity packed days.
