Aillwee Caves
Located in the heart of the Burren in County Clare. Perched high on its Burren terraced mountainside with what has to be one of the most spectacular views of Galway Bay. It is a must for all who find themselves in the area.
The Burren is a place full of wonder, beauty and discovery. The tour consists of a 30-minute stroll through the beautiful caverns – over bridged chasms, under weird formations and alongside the thunderous waterfall which sometimes gently sprays the unsuspecting visitor! Marvel at the frozen waterfall and explore the now extinct brown bears’ bones (ursos arctos). Paths and lighting have been installed throughout, making the visit suitable for all ages. Exercise sheets and our information booklets are available on request
The guides will bring you back to the outside world where you can browse and shop in a distinctly different gift shop which is housed in the award-winning complex that guards the entrance to the Burren underground.
Topics covered on the tour include:
- How caves form in limestone
- The discovery and exploration of Aillwee Cave
- How stalagmites, stalactites and flowstone are formed
- Preservation of the natural cave environment
- Zoology – animals and plant life of the cave
- Continental drift and the formation of limestone
- Geology of the cave

‘Amazing’
“This was the first time in about 15 years that I have holidayed in Ireland. It was superb. This hotel is so suitable for families, kids club, swimming pool, really child friendly staff, good choice of food and excellent breakfast. On the way home we went by Father Ted’s house. I would really recommend Treacys West County Hotel In Ennis and County Clare as a holiday destination.”
‘Great Hotel for a Family Break Away’
