Lough Derg is a freshwater lake in the Shannon River Basin and is the third biggest freshwater lake in the island of Ireland. Lough Derg is a long and narrow lake that has shores in Clare, Galway and Tipperary. It has 179km of shoreline stretching over 40km from Portumna at it’s Northern tip to Killaloe and Ballina in the south. The lake is also over 12km at it’s widest point.
Many activities take place at Lough Derg such as canoeing, kayaking, waterskiing, surfing and aqua diving while it is also a popular angling destination. There are also walking trailing, cycling trails and mountain bike trails close to Lough Derg. There are over 90 heritage and cultural sites close to Lough Derg thanks to the lake’s long history. In the early medieval times, Lough Derg was an important part of highway from the Atlantic Ocean to the Irish Midlands. Many of the historic attractions near Lough Derg are associated with Brian Boru who was once the high king of Ireland who ruled from Killaloe between 1002 and 1014.
